This episode of Dubspot Radio Rewind welcomes Ancient Astronauts, the retro-futurist duo from Cologne, Germany with an eclectic live DJ set followed by an exclusive interview.
In this in interview video, Kabanjak and Dogu of the production and DJ duo Ancient Astronauts hailing from Cologne, Germany took a break from traveling the “cosmos of music” to drop by Dubspot for an exclusive live DJ set and interview. After an eclectic performance of hip-hop, dancehall, funk and dub, which also includes a batch of original cuts and remixes we talked to the band about the idea behind Ancient Astronauts, advice to new producers, music influences, production techniques, gear used in their productions and live performances, and more.

The Ancient Astronauts are Kabanjak and Dogu, a bulletproof production and DJ duo hailing from Cologne, Germany. The phenomenon of Ancient Astronauts is a belief that extraterrestrial beings visited Earth in ancient times to mingle and trade ideas with early human civilizations. The cross-pollination and mashup of ideas, sounds, styles, and a collaborative spirit are their modus operandi.
Although, the long-time friends are quick to admit that they are not followers of the German music scene, Kabanjak notes, “for us music is and will always be an international phenomena,” and Ancient Astronauts are certainly not afraid to draw on influences from international artists and styles.
Self-described as a “mashup of the distant past and far future,” these time travelers’ music is a mystic brew born out of an eclectic mix of ideas, sounds, and styles. The Ancient Astronauts have remixed and collaborated with artists such as Fort Knox Five, Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets), Zion I, The Pharcyde, Azeem, Analogik, Subatomic Sound System and Anthony B, DJ Brace, Bajka, Vieux Farka Toure, Raashan Ahmad, Zion Train, Bajka, Sleepy Wonder, See-I, and Tippa Irie.
“At an early stage, we realized that we are both big music heads, so we started running parties in our hometown together.” Those parties became the catalyst for a production team that never forgot its roots. They specialize in diversity loosely glued together by a single thread. Like a good party, you don’t just listen to the music; you experience it.
In 2001 Ancient Astronauts started their own label Switchstance Recordings, which was developed as a way of allowing them total musical freedom. The label soon gathered momentum and built up an impressive fan base including the likes of veteran DJ Mr. Scruff. Switchstance Recordings is now famous in international club circles for the integrity of its production and style.

In this iOS music app review, San Diego-based composer Matt Isom aka Eyeball Jackson takes us through Skram by Liine, a module-based iPad app that lets you create heavy-hitting electronic music for anyone wanting a fast and inspiring music-maker.
Few iPad apps provide an immediately rewarding musical experience compared to Skram by Liine, which offers a taste of what a flexible tablet groove sequencer should resemble. While Skram succeeds as a fun musical diversion, a few key flaws limit its usefulness for more experienced music makers until pending updates arrive.
Groovebox apps on iOS tend to follow the layout of classic hardware rather than taking advantage of the tablet interface. Skram’s interface succeeds in this regard, putting four modules as well as global controls at your fingertips with a minimum of page-swiping. All the controls are no more than a tap away, making the iPad a streamlined groove machine.
Click here to view the embedded video.
Skram’s core modules are the “BR-909” drum machine and the namesake Skram bass synth. The drum module is a scaled-down, grid-sequenced rhythm machine that brings the Roland vibe you’d expect, a bit dry, but with a deep, punchy kick. The bass synth provides ample dirt and squelch for a range of cool sounds, but the two-octave pitch sequencer doesn’t extend into the sub-rattling realm.
The melodic modules in the Skram starter set are both arpeggiator-controlled synths: Heatstroke is a curious beast that combines a warm resonant filter and overdrive with more alien frequency modulation controls for abrasive, robotic and industrial sounds. Orphic, on the other hand, specializes in percussive, bell-like sounds that sound great in arpeggios and take on a dreamy quality with built-in pitch delay and chorus effects.
Using the modules together is where Skram really gets interesting: While synced, each sequencer has an independent pattern control “widget” that allow you to create contrasting polyrhythms on the fly. It’s surprisingly easy to get all the modules pumping and kicking in complementary rhythm, swapping pattern slots, and keying in changes in pursuit of syncopated bliss.
The clever key chart visually shades harmonically related keys depending on the selected mode. If that sounds like too much music theory, relax, it means you can follow a chart, so you won’t have to think about it, and key changes will always sound harmonically “right.” For example, consider this demo recording, made just five minutes after jumping into Skram:
Well thought-out features like these are unfortunately offset by a few key failing points. For one thing, Skram doesn’t allow you to save program changes. Every time you start the app, you get the same default settings and patterns on all four modules, a stonewalling flaw sure to frustrate even casual users.
Skram does let you record your session, but the file export options are pretty crude, unless you’re using AudioCopy. Fortunately, Liine has indicated that they intend to make Skram compatible with Audiobus and Inter-App Audio, which would not only solve the file export issue, but also allow Skram to integrate with, or at least stand alongside other apps.
I find myself wishing Skram had a more full-featured mixer with EQ and compression. Of course, that would be a departure from its minimalist design. The refreshing simplicity of Skram’s implementation is what makes it appealing as a tool for pros.
More modules and widgets are forthcoming, as well as snapshot saving and gesture control, which is great, but Audiobus and IAA compatibility are what Skram is really missing. As it stands, Skram is an exceptionally fun toy for making headphone grooves while you ride the train. You could even plug it in at a house party and keep people more than entertained. With just a few improvements, Skram could become a bona fide iPad groovebox that inspires creativity in producers of every skill level. Fingers crossed!
Skram is available on the iTunes App Store here.
Read more about Skram on the Skram App website here.
Skram requires a 64-bit iPad and iOS 9.0 or higher.

In this music software review, we look at AutoTheory PRO by Mozaic, an innovative standalone plugin that gives musicians the ability to master music theory and play any instrument in perfect key using any DAW.
AutoTheory PRO is a revolutionary new application that gives musicians the power to play any instrument in perfect key with any DAW. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned veteran, this software will empower anyone with the ability to play complex chords and melodies in perfect key quickly and easy without knowing any music theory. Equipped with either a MIDI keyboard or your computer QWERTY keyboard, you can control up to eight instruments in any DAW with unparalleled versatility.
“Instant creativity! I fired it up in Ableton Live and was building more advanced chord progressions and melodies in key with ease right away. Plus, it’s very educational.” – Rory PQ

Aimed to let anyone with a desire to create music with confidence, AT-P is armed with multiple patented technologies to bring users an arsenal of corrective and workflow enhancing features.
The Chord Generator allows users to play through a variety of chord types in their set key and scale. Once a key and scale are defined, the correlating chords automatically map accordingly on the left side octaves of your keyboard. In addition, there are plenty of options to edit individual tones within each chord.
The Chord Editor feature allows users to edit each chord on a step by step basis, allowing for a totally open-ended approach to chord design. Create extended chords by adjusting the step on/off buttons, take chords out of scale with the step accidental parameters, and create any type of inversion or voicing imaginable with the step octave parameters.
The Chord Memory function reveals more advanced controls over creating chord progressions and can be used in place of the Chord Generator. It allows users to predefine a chord progression loop that will influence the behavior of the Melody Lock. This feature is very helpful in the Chord Tones and Dynamic Scale mappings when you are trying to compose a melody over a preexisting chord progression.
The Melody Lock dynamically generates tones within each chord played on the Chord Generator. This feature arranges the seven scale tones in different configurations based upon the selected mapping. Beginner users can use guided mappings that allow them to keep their fingers in the same position while chord tones are moved to those locations while mappings for more advanced users keep tones in static and natural positions. In addition, users can play through them naturally or arpeggiate the tones with an intuitive Arp Mode.
The MIDI Outputs allow users to control up to eight instruments in the DAW of their choice. The Chord Generator and Melody Lock each have four outputs with options to send the whole chord, just the root, or octave adjustments to give users an unmatched tool to control multiple instruments.

The best producers, DJs, and musicians in the world strive to be well-rounded. So should you. In Dubspot’s Music Foundations Program, you’ll explore three major aspects of music: rhythmic theory, melodic theory, and critical listening.
Most pioneering early electronic musicians had years of conservatory training in theory and performance but had access to very limited technologies. In today’s musical world, it’s the opposite: we have a powerful and versatile array of electronic music making tools at our fingertips, but often fall short in our theoretical understanding of how electronic music works.
Our Music Foundations program is designed to fill this gap and provide training in fundamental skills and concepts with the electronic musician, DJ, and producer in mind. In this course, you’ll build your chops and learn the basics of musical language and theory so that you can make and play the music you want. You will also develop a deeper understanding of the roots and lineage of a variety of electronic and dance music genres, and explore compositional techniques and song structure. The weekly homework lessons for all three courses have been designed using Ableton Live, and along the way you’ll also learn the basics of Ableton and how to use it as a powerful tool to improve your musicianship in a variety of ways.
Visit the Music Foundations course page for detailed information on this program here.
