Hands on Collaborative Music Making and Audio Experience

Geek Street Fair

This year at Google’s New York Geek Street Fair Dubspot showcased the all-new Sound Arcade. Developed by Dubspot Instructors Adriano Clemente and Matt Heffernan, the Sound Arcade brings an interactive electronic music “jam band” to your fingertips. Guests of all ages and skill levels enjoy a creative and hands-on experience with music, technology, and education. The Sound Arcade’s design includes six Akai APC40 controller instruments connected to Ableton Live software to create a flexible environment for creating, performing, and producing music as a group. Each APC40 controller is mapped to a different instrument and various sound effects allowing individual control of drums, keys, guitar, bass, percussion, and vocals. The Sound Arcade brings back the traditional communal band experience with a new twist using synthesizers and programmed drums while retaining the spontaneous experience of creating music with others.

How Did the Idea for the Sound Arcade Art Table Come About?

Sound Arcade

The idea came about through repurposing the Akai APC40′s that had previously been used in the classrooms but were replaced by Ableton’s PUSH controller. The APC40′s had provided thousands of our students with a viable way to harness their spontaneous creative ideas, and we wanted to expose others to this great tool. We were also searching for a more collaborative method of performing electronic music and exploring musical ideas as an interactive group. ~ Kelly Webb, Dubspot Director of Student Affairs
