Dubspot Radio Rewind: SentZ – Día De Muertos (Halloween Mix)

For this halloween weekend we present Brooklyn-based DJ/producer and Dubspot NYC staff member Cliff Callender a.k.a. SentZ who crafts a special Day of the Dead-themed mix featuring a superb selection of contemporary and supernatural sounds to commemorate the Halloween season. Día de Muertos was recorded live using Ableton Live and Akai APC40.

“Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays because it reminds me of spacey, spooky music and candy! This year I’ll be using Ableton Push and an Akai APC40 in a dub set with some of my favorite Halloween gems. You’ll have to get your own candy.” - Cliff Callender a.k.a. SentZ

Brooklyn born producer and DJ SentZ has found a lot of recent success as the gap between hip hop and electronic music continues to fade. With production that draws from both Rinse FM and Rawkus, he’s been tapped for work with Danny Brown, G-Side, Flatbush Zombies and longtime friends Mr. MFN eXquire and Lakutis. As a live producer and remixer, he’s been asked to tour with various hip hop heavyweights, including El-P and Killer Mike during their infamous Into the Wild Tour in 2012, and Run the Jewels tour in 2013.

In our exclusive interview, SentZ delves into his creative process, which began at the age of 13 with Fruity Loops 1.5 and evolved into Ableton, which supports his non-conventional method of creating the melody first — “I’m one of those weird people who doesn’t start with drums”. He also talks about growing up in Brooklyn, attending choir practice with his mom, having DJ parents and how all these elements have shaped his sound and love for music. SentZ also delves into the “beat community” differences between the LA and NY and how that community in New York is changing.

Keep up with SentZ on Soundcloud, Facebook and Twitter.

Gear Review: Multipass Effect Plugin by kiloHearts w/ Rory PQ

In this gear review, Dubspot’s Rory PQ takes us through the new multiband modular processor plugin by kiloHearts called Multipass. Get an in-depth look at the intuitive interface and all the features that make this powerful, modern multiband effect processing tool worth adding to your arsenal.

Multipass

kiloHearts, the Swedish software developers of the popular kHs ONE, Faturator, and Disperser plugins have announced the release of their latest creation called Multipass. This impressive modular multiband processor is capable of splitting a track’s input signal into a maximum of five different fully adjustable frequency bands called ‘Lanes’ that can be processed independently using a selection of effect plugins called ‘Snap-ins.’

Let’s delve deeper into this powerful effect processor and take a closer look at the customizable interface and many features included in the Beta version. The interactive interface displays a modern workflow complete with various options to process your sounds, as well as an expandable preset library window. Multipass has all the tools you need to produce a powerful and polished sound in one intuitive plugin for a mixing experience that inspires creativity. Let’s check out what this innovative multiband effect processor has to offer.

Macro Controls

Multipass

The upper-left section of the interface has eight Macro controls that can be assigned to nearly every available parameter in Multipass. To assign a parameter to a Macro, simply hover your mouse over any of the eight knobs to reveal an orange link icon. After clicking the orange link icon, smaller orange knobs will appear under every parameter that can be assigned to a Macro control. Adjusting these orange knobs will set the amount of influence the assigned Macro has over the selected parameter. You can also assign multiple parameters to a single Macro for simultaneous control. Assigning Macros makes it easy to manage essential parameters better or create complex control relationships between effects, making it simple to forge truly unique sounds.

Modulation

Multipass

The upper-right section of the interface is where you can assign LFO, Envelope, and different types of expression control modulation to any available parameter. Setting up a modulation source to control a parameter is accomplished the same way as assigning Macro controls. Hover your mouse over a modulation source to reveal an orange link icon. After clicking the orange link icon, smaller orange knobs will appear under every parameter that can be modulated. Adjusting these orange knobs will set the amount of influence the assigned modulation source has over the selected parameter. This section includes two LFO sources with selectable waveforms and retrigger options, two Envelope sources with different curve options and envelope follow modes, and a MIDI section for setting up Modwheel, Pitchwheel, and expression modulation. Oddly, there is also a section for playing the classic 8-bit game, Snake.

Multiband Effect Lanes

Multipass by kiloHearts

The center area of Multipass harnesses the core concept of this plugin and is divided up into sections called ‘Lanes’ that allow us to separate the input signal into different channels where multiple Snap-ins can be added to create custom effect chains that operate in parallel.

The far left Lane labeled ‘Pre FX’ is used to add Snap-ins that process the input signal before it splits into different frequency bands. To add a Snap-in, hover your mouse over an empty area of the Lane and click to reveal a list of available effect plugins. You can add as many Snap-ins as you like and reorder them to build an effect chain that fits your needs.

The center section of Multipass is where the magic happens. This set of Lanes is divided into five frequency bands that can each be loaded with their own chain of Snap-ins. Splitting the frequency spectrum into fully adjustable and independent bands gives us the ability to process different parts of the sound separately to produce a more powerful sound. Each Lane has crossover points that can be adjusted to define the frequency ranges for the bands. There are also options, to Mute, Solo, and disable any of the Lanes. When a Lane is disabled, the signal will pass through unaffected. Also, you don’t have to use all five Lanes if it’s not necessary. Only enable the Lanes for the frequency ranges you wish to process. To add a Snap-in, simply click on an empty area of the Lane and choose your desired effect from the list. Again, the Snap-ins can be rearranged to suit your needs.

Multipass

The far right Lane labeled ‘Post FX’ is used to add Snap-ins that process the combined output signal as a whole. Think of this Lane as the master channel before the signal leaves the plugin. Adding Snap-ins to this Lane is achieved the same way as all the other Lanes.

Below each Lane is a set of parameters that allow you to control the output signal further. You can set the output Gain, Panning, Mix amount, and the influence the Post Lane effects will have on the output.

Multipass

Snap-in Effects

Multipass by kiloHearts

All the effect plugins included in Multipass are called ‘Snap-ins,’ which can also be loaded as stand-alone effects. You can use as many, or as few Snap-ins as you fancy with Multipass, and you can order them however you like. This amount of flexibility allows you to easily manipulate sounds in a fun way using only one plugin rather than several plugins.

Below is the current list of Snap-ins included with Multipass. kiloHearts has also announced they plan on releasing additional Snap-ins in future releases. In addition, Disperser and Faturator are compatible with Multipass as well!

  • Bitcrush
  • Chorus
  • Comb Filter
  • Compressor
  • Delay
  • Disperser
  • Distortion
  • Faturator
  • Filter
  • Formant Filter
  • Frequency Shifter
  • Gain
  • Haas
  • Limiter
  • Phaser
  • Pitch Shifter
  • Resonator
  • Stereo
  • Trance Gate

Preset Library

Multipass

The preset library can be expanded from the top preset display menu. The Beta version of Multipass comes loaded with nine different preset folders stacked with over 80 impressive sound mangling presets geared for various mixing situations. There are also options to save user defined presets, change the preset folder location, and create new folders.

Final Thoughts

Multipass is a forward-thinking effect processing plugin that integrates essential tools for mixing and sound design into one simple, user-friendly interface. Multipass’s modular approach for multiband processing is convenient, and the included Snap-ins sound great. Multiband processing is not new technology, and you can easily create multiband Effect Racks in Ableton Live. However, this plugin streamlines the process and can save you valuable time. I can see this plugin being a valuable music tool for people using other DAWs that don’t have the capability of creating custom multiband devices. Multipass’s modernized user interface, powerful features, and unlimited possibilities make this plugin a great all-in-one solution that certainly encourages creative experimentation.

Release Details

Multipass will be available to purchase November 13th from the kiloHearts website.

Multipass will be released as 32 and 64 bit VST/AU plugins.

Music Tech News Roundup: Dave Smith, Critter and Guitari, Sequential Circuits, Roland, Eventide +

2015 is turning out to be quite the year for synthesizers. In our third music tech news roundup of the month we find new synths from Critter & Guitari and Dave Smith, sound examples from Roland’s new Boutique series of synths, a new video from Arpeggio, and  a package of Sonic Faction instruments for Kontakt users.

Prophet-6 Desktop | 6-Voice Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer

Click here to view the embedded video.

The Prophet-6 desktop module is every bit as powerful and easy to use as its counterpart, the Prophet-6 Keyboard. The module has all of the same controls as the keyboard version and provides the same immediacy and ease of use — with absolutely no menu diving. As with the Prophet-6 Keyboard, all parameters are at your fingertips, with full-sized knobs and switches and a comfortable, intuitive layout.

How does it sound? Awesome — just like the keyboard, because on the inside, it’s exactly the same. The same analog signal path with discrete VCOs and VCFs. The same high-quality digital effects. The same classic sound that has been earning raves from customers and reviewers alike. We’ve also added a poly chain feature so that any two Prophet-6s can be paired for twelve-voice polyphony!

Critter & Guitari Organelle | Open-Source Music Box

organelle2As you may know, Critter & Guitari are among our favorite musical instrument creators. So when we heard they are making an open source synthesizer that is based on a Linux system we got very excited. No release date as of yet but we’ve seen “late 2015″ mentioned on other sites.

Press releases: The Organelle makes it easy to explore new sounds and experiment with new ways of making music. It combines playful and intuitive controls with a powerful and flexible sound engine. The result is an instrument that is limitless in musical possibility and a joy to play.

At the heart of the Organelle’s sound engine is a robust computer that runs patches. A patch allows the instrument to take on different forms. Onboard hardware for sound input and output and mappable knobs, keys and buttons enable patches to synthesize, sample, effect, and anything in between!

The Organelle ships with a set of common default patches, and new patches may be loaded from a USB drive. Simply select patches from a continually-growing list, transfer them to a USB drive, reinsert it in the Organelle, and play!

Live Performance Techniques Part 1: Performance Playthrough w/ Atropolis

In this first video of a three-part series about Live Performance Techniques, Dubspot Instructor Adam Partridge aka Atropolis demonstrates his live set and performs a Global Bass routine with various instruments. In the second and third part of the series, Adam will share his approach to performing live and take us further into his set while sharing many helpful techniques to help improve your live sets.

Click here to view the embedded video.

In this first video of a three-part series about Live Performance Techniques, Dubspot Instructor Adam Partridge aka Atropolis takes us through his live set and performs a Global Bass routine using various instruments. Watch as Adam performs his remix of “Batuque” by Dom La Nena, using Ableton Live connected to a drum pad for playing and recording percussion, an Ableton Push for launching clips, a Livid Instruments DS1 for mixing and manipulating effects, two Akai MIDI keyboards for playing rhythms, and a Gaita: a tradition Columbian Woodwind. In the second and third part of the series, Adam will give us a closer look at his live setup while sharing his approach to performing live and offering some great techniques to help improve your live sets.

My Own Personal Journey: Ways of Creating a Live Set

During this performance, I played two tracks, one of my own original track’s, ‘Urban Chief’, which is the track that I start with and transition into the second track, ‘Batuque’, an official remix Jeremy Sole and myself did for Dom La Nena. Through the various gigs I have had with this set, the order of these two tracks remain the same, however, I have discovered new parts through performance and improvisation that has allowed me to expand and switch things up. For example, for this performance I decided to scoop out the main melody of ‘Urban Chief’ and play on the flute, a famous traditional Colombian folkloric song, called “La Curura” over the rhythm section. I also lay a new chord progression over the transition and drop off the second track, “Batuque”, that never existed in the released version. Gaining control over your live set gives you the creative freedom to change, add, rearrange, mash-up, and improvise on the fly without having to look at your computer.

To get a sense of the changes I just described, check out these three musical ideas in their original form:

Atropolis | Urban Chief

Dom La Nena | Batuque (Jeremy Sole & Atropolis)

Toto La Momposina | La Curura

Click here to view the embedded video.

The Short Version

  • Ask what you need and want out of your live performance
  • Figure out what equipment you may need to achieve your performance
  • Sort out a system that organizes your songs into a live set template
  • Experiment and try things out to iron out the details
  • Build custom tools to give you the power to manipulate your sound
  • PRACTICE!

Transitioning from DJ to Live Set

Transitioning from a DJ to a live set was always an aspiration, being a live musician since the age of 8 I was itching to get back to more of a live performance where I am creating music on the spot. I had a vague idea of what had to be done but like any creative process; the thought is way easier than the actual process itself. First, I did some research to gain some ideas of where to start and I soon discovered that creating a live set was a very personal and custom set up. There isn’t one way to go about this process, rather a set of questions you need to ask yourself in regards to what you need in order to create a live set. I strongly suggest reading Timo Preece’s article on Ask Audio, “Preparing a Custom Live Music Performance Setup.” I found his guidance to be very helpful and inspirational; please refer to his article as an extension to this one.

The definition of a live set can mean a number of things. For instance, my live set comprises of clips from my original tracks, official remixes, and live performance aspects where I am playing a drum synthesizer, the keys, and a traditional Colombian flute, the Gaita. It is a combination of pre-recorded musical ideas with live components. I am not recreating every aspect of my music on the spot. Some artists may define their live set as only triggering and manipulating clips. I am open to all definitions of what constitutes a live set. For me, a live set is a performance that can be solely the manipulation of your own musical ideas in clip format to creating everything from start to finish, to what I am doing, which is a hybrid of these two worlds.

Be sure to catch the two next videos where I will talk about my own personal process and demonstrate the custom tools used to build my live set.
