In our January 2016 Dubspot Student Spotlight, we highlight some outstanding student artists, producers, DJ’s, and musicians who have recently taken courses at Dubspot NYC, LA, and Online. Get to know DVJ King Arthur, HEOS, Ðr. Richard MacMaster, and James Chelios.
DVJ King Arthur | San Juan, Puerto Rico
The character of DVJ KING ARTHUR was released in 2009 by a Mechanical Engineer student named Arturo Hernandez Padin, who also has 11 years of experience in the music business. The name of DVJ KING ARTHUR is related to his creator. The name of the ”DVJ” stands for Disc Video Jockey, ”King” stands for a Puertorrican Holiday (The 3 Magic Kings Eve” on January 5) which is the date Arturo was born, and ”Arthur” stands for its name. Also, his father named him Arturo in the name of the real King Arthur.
DVJ King Arthur’s costume is based on the King Arthur armor back in the days of history but with a creative robotic design. This futuristic character is always ready for a new battle, always ready for a new party, and always ready to make an impressive show. The helmet and suit were designed and build by himself, applying his knowledge as a mechanical engineer to add special features like night vision, lasers, blue eyes, temperature control, and an air replacement system. His armor is white and frosted which stands out the reflection of its own suit multicolor lights. All of this design was created with not only the purpose of entertaining the people but also to make them wonder and imagine (How can he do that?) and to promote the fact that we can all do all that we dream of; we just have to try to do it.
DVJ King Arthur has a passion for electronic music, but his specialty is Electro, House, and Dubstep. This choice of gender is because it has more synth sounds with an aggressive beat that always get the crowd going. He believes that electronic music will help make the world a better and happier place. King Arthur is the resident DJ of the weekly television show called Adrenalina Sin Frenos (ASF) every Tuesday night on Univision Puerto Rico since 2009. He is always trying to make the crowd jump to the beat, playing special mixes by adding his own touch of the beat that stands out with his unique creativity. A perfect, flawless DJ set is what King Arthur always delivers. His personal goal as a DJ is to play and be one of the first 100 DJs of the world on ”The List ” and to be a part of the lineup at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami or Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas.

HEOS | Biel, Switzerland
Oliver Jonas aka HEOS is a Biel (Switzerland) based musician and producer interested in different musical styles. His aspiration is to combine electronic and acoustic elements in his productions. He appreciates networking with like-minded artists, as he currently collaborates with a fellow Dubspot student, Parker Hurley (UnitiMusik).
His main engagement is, together with friends, in a long-term project: the WILBERFORCE. The WILBERFORCE is a collective of musicians, filmmakers, and visual artists. A group united by adherence to a shared vision: “to make goodness fashionable” – a phrase coined by the name giving abolitionist William Wilberforce. This, of course, entails that they focus not only on the form of art – how it is made but also on the content of it. The aim is to create imaginative worlds, which offer critique and hope for the world we live in.

“Dubspot consistently expanded my horizons technically and musically. The thing I appreciate most about the courses is that they help me employ the tools I already own in a more productive way, so I can focus on producing music and not on scouting other tools. Dubspot made me aware of all the potential that I can realize with what I already have, and this was instrumental in raising my music to another level.” ~ HEOS
Ðr. Richard MacMaster | Queens, NY
Richard is a philosophy major at Fordham University and aspiring music producer. He grew up in Queens, New York where he developed a passion for Hip Hop and Electronic music. He is also a student at Dubspot on behalf of the Matthew Steven Azar Ableton Live Scholarship. In collaboration with Bridging Education and Art Together NYC (B.E.A.T NYC), Dubspot awarded The Matthew Steven Azar Ableton Live Scholarship to celebrate the memory of Matthew Azar, a promising young musician who was tragically killed by a drunk driver. The scholarship was established through the efforts of Matthew’s father, Steven Azar to honor his son and help other aspiring musicians attain their dreams in the music industry. Matthew’s dream was to attend Dubspot NYC, and through this scholarship the gift of music will be passed down to another young music lover in Matthew’s honor.
“In my past few months at Dubspot, I’ve become incredibly comfortable using Ableton Live and making music that is truly my own. The professors are fantastic, and have really helped me find my sound and express myself through music.” ~ Richard Hauser Jr.
James Chelios | London, United Kingdom
Launching his interest in music production at the age of 13 after hearing “Pump up the Jam” by Technotronic, London-based producer James Helios has been working hard developing his sound. His musical influences are far and wide, as there are only two kinds of music – good music and bad music. James’ breakthrough album ‘End of the Universe’ captures many of his inspirations by fusing breakbeats and dubstep with psytrance to form a signature chillout sound.
“The Maschine course was really inspiring, and not only taught me Maschine inside out but also improved my production skills all round.” ~ James Chelios
