In the latest edition of Dubspot Radio Podcast, Nigerian DJ and globetrotter DJ OBI visits Dubspot NYC and takes us on a soulful journey around the world. Following his set, DJ OBI sat down with us for an exclusive interview to discuss his early influences as a DJ, the music scene in Nigeria, and also offers some positive advice to young DJs.

DJ OBI has been in the business of making people move to his diverse style of music for over 8 years — “I really try to take people on a trip around the world”. His passion, dedication and love for music led him to win the Nigerian Entertainment Award (NEA) for “World’s Best DJ”, plus he is a member of the famous coalition of Nigerian DJs and official DJ for Syndik8 Records. During his recent trip to New York, DJ OBI sat down with Dubspot and discussed his musical background, his path to becoming a DJ and breaking into the New York music scene. He also discusses the music scene in Nigeria and how the scene is changing quickly — “everyone is paying attention to what Africa has to offer”. He wraps up the interview with some sound advice for young DJs looking to move ahead in the music world, delving into the promoter/DJ relationship and how it’s important to get to know people in the party atmosphere before jumping into business right away — “As DJs, we are party people already — so don’t take life too seriously, just relax… when you are doing the right thing, you just end up in the right places.”
