CNTRPNT: Modular Synthesis + Music Technology

Featuring
Villain

Friday, June 12th, 2015
4:00pm – 6:00pm PST
Dubspot LA Room 1

CNTRPNT is a monthly workshop series hosted by Dubspot LA focusing on modular synthesis and music technology. Each month features a performance from a different artist or visionary as well as a discussion about their methods and motivations of working in the modular synth world. Moderated by creators Computo and Viktor Carrillo, CNTRPNT aims to spread a wider awareness of the growing Eurorack and hardware modular synthesizer industry, in addition to demystifying the often confusing intersection of hardware and software-based music production.

For this CNTRPNT modular workshop, LA techno producer, Villain will be sharing his insight and workflow on performing live with modular systems. Also, we will open the floor to talk about sound design, recording, and answer any questions.

CNTRPNT takes place on the first Friday of every month from 4-6 pm. The events are FREE and open to the public. Space is limited, please arrive early to sign in.

About Villain

For the last 14 years, Chris Thomas has been involved in various facets of electronic music. First DJing, and then moving into production, he began to perform live in 2003. Although his style sometimes blurs genre lines, his output is most notably deeper, darker techno. Having put out a steady stream of music under the name Villain on London’s Singularity since 2006, he has also released on LA’s Droid, and most recently Futra. His live setup has evolved over the years, but one constant has always been some form of hardware that facilitates hands-on creativity. More recently, the inclusion of modular gear has allowed him to take fleeting, spontaneous expression to another level. Always wanting to travel with the most compact setup possible, he saw a need in the Eurorack world for more portable cases. Thus, Submodular Systems was born, which has started production of a line of ultra-portable cases that will be debuting soon.
