The Story Behind the Creation Process by Mike Kiraly
Hybrid Transition FX
1+1=3?
Creative endeavors tend to flourish when the creator is laboring to make the final product greater than the sum of its parts. Sound design is no different. Those who seek to develop unique sounds might first consider looking at the sonic potential of melding two or three more commonplace sounds, especially when those sounds are seemingly unrelated.
The folder labeled Hybrid Transition FX contains a selection of hits, risers, and fallers created by layering various source material in an attempt to make a cohesive sound from disparate parts. Hair dryers, broken violins, analog synths, space heaters, children’s toys, acoustic guitars, etc., etc. No sound is off limits. Throw in some time stretching, pitch shifting, delays and reverbs, and you’ve got a sound that has never been heard before by anyone, anywhere.
Gear Used: Any random item I could get my hands on, Ableton Live, Melodyne, Eventide Eclipse, Yamaha SPX2000, and various plug-in effects.
Organic Melodies
I like synths. I love synths. And I especially love synths which can provide a broad range of timbres. There’s a time and place for the buzzy sawtooth lead or the deep square wave bass riff, but I also enjoy exploring alternate synthesis methods such as frequency modulation and physical modeling. These can lead to beautiful synthetic tones that can feel organic, almost as if they have origins in the physical world.
The folder labeled Organic Melodies contains synth riffs and arps created from various software, hardware, and modular synths that are not limited to traditional subtractive synthesis paradigms. Therefore, they can be coaxed to produce notes that sound as if they are objects that have been hit, plucked or strummed.

Organic Rhythms
There’s really not much to say about this group of samples, other than I love the Korg Wavedrum. I firmly believe it’s the best electronic drum instrument that has ever been produced. It relies on complex physical modeling to produce a staggering range of sounds that are eminently expressive. And the best part, there’s no MIDI input or output. The manner in which it responds to human interaction is too complex to be accurately converted to the limited number of values that MIDI has to offer. So why is this such a great thing for me? Because I am forced to play and record it live, which always results in a more natural feel to the resulting rhythms and loops. Well, maybe a little time correction is needed to compensate for my horrible drumming skills…

Mike Kiraly has spent the past ten years absorbing everything he could about the tools and techniques of his trade as a producer, sound designer, and engineer based in New York City. Currently dividing his time between personal productions and freelance engineering for other artists, Mike has amassed over 50 credits on a wide variety of releases since 2007. His unique production ethic has always gravitated towards an intricate approach, relying heavily on imaginative sound design. The last four years have seen his portfolio broaden in scope, including on-site work as an audio and video cable technician for NBC Universal during the Olympics in Beijing, Vancouver, and London. In 2012, Mike undertook a new challenge with the launch of the video tutorial series Sound // Concept. Hosted and promoted in cooperation with popular electronic music portal Pulse Radio, this passion project was an outlet for Mike to pass along creative techniques to eager producers looking to expand their skill set.
