For this edition of Dubspot Sounds, Mike Kiraly ventured out into the world armed only with a portable recorder in search to capture sounds from any machine, motor, or engine to create a collection of mechanical sounds. This pack also includes a wealth of loops recorded by modern drum machines, as well as rhythmic, percussive sounds generated from a Eurorack modular synthesizer.

The Story Behind the Creation Process by Mike Kiraly
Mechanical Drum Loops
To create this collection of loops, I ventured out into the world armed only with a portable recorder in search to capture sounds from any machine, motor, or engine. You would be amazed at the wealth of rhythmic mechanical sounds that can be found anywhere and everywhere from cars, motorcycles, bike chains, lawn mowers, snow blowers, food processors, car windows, and beyond. You get the idea.
However, the real treasure is to be found in places your not ordinarily allowed to go. Walk into a machine shop or recycling station or car parts junkyard and strike up a conversation with the person in charge. Tell them you’re interested in recording some of the machines in their establishment to use as sound fx in musical compositions. I’ve found that, more often than not, people are intrigued enough by your request that they are willing to give you a guided tour while you record anything that makes a noise. Just don’t be obtrusive, and be sure to respect any restrictions or safety guidelines they set forth.
These particular loops were created by chopping up and rearranging a collection of recordings made at a commercial wood shop and lumber yard. I was able to capture a wide variety of engines and motors from industrial saws to trash compactors. The resulting loops were generously compressed to give them a more cohesive sound.

Modern Drum Machines Loops
Yes, we all agree that those Roland vintage drum machines are the de facto standard for electronic drum sounds, but that doesn’t mean we have to ignore everything else. The past few years have seen the introduction of several future classics that have a tremendous amount of sonic character to be enjoyed.
For these drum loops, I stayed away from those well-known machines located in the archives and explored the deep functionality offered by some of the more recently released beat boxes.

Modular Synth Loops and Hits
There’s no escaping the buzz that Eurorack modular synthesizers have generated in the past few years, which is well deserved. The modules being produced by the growing number of small, entrepreneurial manufacturers are becoming increasingly creative every day.
For this collection of samples, I pressed the record button and spent the next several hours getting lost in patch cables. I wanted to generate rhythmic, percussive sounds, so I made sure to sync the clock of my modular to my DAW. This approach allowed me to scan through the recorded audio later on and edit out loops and hits that I thought had something special without having to edit the timing to conform to my preferred tempo.

Mike Kiraly has spent the past ten years absorbing everything he could about the tools and techniques of his trade as a producer, sound designer, and engineer based in New York City. Currently dividing his time between personal productions and freelance engineering for other artists, Mike has amassed over 50 credits on a wide variety of releases since 2007. His unique production ethic has always gravitated towards an intricate approach, relying heavily on imaginative sound design. The last four years have seen his portfolio broaden in scope, including on-site work as an audio and video cable technician for NBC Universal during the Olympics in Beijing, Vancouver, and London. In 2012, Mike undertook a new challenge with the launch of the video tutorial series Sound // Concept. Hosted and promoted in cooperation with popular electronic music portal Pulse Radio, this passion project was an outlet for Mike to pass along creative techniques to eager producers looking to expand their skill set.
