Dubspot Student Spotlight: April 2016 Outstanding Talent

In our April 2016 Dubspot Student Spotlight, we highlight some outstanding student artists, producers, DJ’s, and musicians who have taken courses at Dubspot NYC, LA, and Online. Get to know High Zombie, Leo Salom, SlangBeats, and 81Neutronz. High Zombie | Boulder, CO High Zombie started in August of 2015 in Boulder, CO. Within a year, Matt Hood, better known as High Zombie, caught the attention of many large artists like Diplo, Prismo, Bleep Bloop, Ookay, Ship Wrek, Part Native, and Sweet Teeth. High Zombie has releases on Plenum Records, Nextgen Records, Trap Sounds Collective, Tune Collective, ZAKES Collective, and SWANG Collective. With a very unique sound, High Zombie blends different genres of music to create a brain-decaying bass. Already peaking 2,000 SoundCloud followers, his song ‘Crutches’ was purchased by World of Dance for their Volume Two worldwide release alongside artists Graves, Kayoh, PRXZM, and Dabow. “Dubspot helped me understand the fundamentals of Ableton, allowing my creative progressions to really take off. All the instructors were there, day and night, to help me improve my sound, as well as teach me one-on-one in private sessions. If it wasn’t for such an amazing program offered, I for sure wouldn’t have the skills I have today.” - High Zombie   Leo Salom | Los Angeles, CA Leo Salom is inspired creatively by every place he visits and the people he meets from around the world. Leo began taking an interest in music playing drums where he discovered a passion for creating electronic music, ranging from Deep House, House to Techno. Along with his love for making music, he craves performing live. Creating music is Leo’s passion and obsession, and if he is not in his closet studio making beats you can find him surfing. The ocean is a place where Leo is completely at peace. “My experience at Dubspot has radically changed the way I create music. Apart from being in contact with people that have a completely different experience from mine, I started to shape my own sounds from scratch. I think this is crucial because the way to create good music is endless, so it is very important to achieve a result that is being pursued.” – Leo Salom   SlangBeats | Montreal, Canada 80’s baby Beatmaker SlangBeats from Montreal, Quebec is a 27-year-old producer who launched his interest in making music with the arrival of MASCHINE mkII. Drawing influences from reggae, rock, hip-hop, trap, pop, soul, blues, and metal music, Vince produces mainly hip-hop, R&B pop, and trap beats, but is also a big fan of experimental music of every kind. Wanting to know how to transpose the music in his head onto an audio track led Vince to take MASCHINE classes at Dubspot with instructors Matt Cellitti and Justin Aswell. Vince then continued his music education at Dubspot through their Music Foundations course to improve his musical knowledge. Using MASCHINE Studio as his gear of choice, Vince collaborates with a few local Montreal producers and artists. “I’m having a blast creating tracks and linking up with singers and producers on projects while doing my thing.” Back in 2005, Vince studied Artist Management and Event Production when he first moved to the city. He also owns a jewelry consultant store called #WhoIsYourJeweler. “I put myself in a position where I could continue to make music because that is what I love. When we have free time at the store, I just hop in the back store where I set up a workstation to make beats. No time wasted.” Motivated by his favorite music producers Dr. Dre, Harry Fraud, Metro Boomin, and Zaytoven, SlangBeats continues to focus on improving and perfecting his craft while striving to work with major artist’s when the time is right. “The MASCHINE course was a life changer for me. I had no musical knowledge what so ever. I just loved the simplicity of the instrument, playing none but every instrument on the pads.” – SlangBeats   81Neutronz | Manhattan, NY Nick “81Neutronz” Low-Beer is a composer, audio engineer and performer/DJ best known for his Electronica, Ambient, and Hip Hop music. As a composer, Nick is credited for his contribution to the track which became “Cinderella Man” on Eminem’s Grammy Award winning album “Recovery”. Nick has also worked with genius British electronic musician LX Paterson and completed various projects for film and television for Broadway Legend Sergio Trujillo, choreographer behind Jersey Boys, Memphis, and Leap Of Faith. An interest in composing and producing original music was sparked by his early introduction to DJing. As a performer/DJ, Nick has gained a following in the Manhattan club scene. The origins of this talent are rooted in the summer of 1997, when on he was gifted turntables for his 14th birthday by LX Paterson of the Orb, who remains one of Nick’s greatest influences. Nick began spinning at parties, making remixes, and entering local DJ contests. Nick attended Colorado State University, where he DJ’d opening sets for legendary rap artists and groups like Wu-Tang’s Raekwon and The Beatnuts. He left CSU early and relocated to Manhattan to pursue a career in music. Nick was born in Westchester, New York in 1983. By his fourth birthday, he was showing an interest in astronomy and break dancing. He was enrolled in a preschool where he learned Suzuki violin. Interest in literature, art and music would lead Nick to practice Qigong as a core principal of his interest in martial arts. Nick currently resides in Manhattan. “I found the Dubspot flyer and decided I would go check it out. The next Sunday, I went over, and it was just about the coolest place I’d seen. So I just jumped right in, and I completed the Ableton classes and was a humble student of DJ Shiftee.” – 81Neutronz   Open House in NYC: Sundays 11am | Guided Tour of LA Ask questions. Watch demos.
